Playing for Life Needs Your Help!

Playing for Life Volunteers

Playing for Life is BASL's Annual Softball Tournament, attended by teams from NAGAAA cities from across the U.S..  This year, Playing for Life VII will take place over Labor Day weekend in Central Park.  Mike D'Antonio and Anthony Giannoccora, tournament co-directors, are seeking volunteers to assist on the weekend of the tournament.

Tasks that need assistance include:
  • Unpacking and re-packing the equipment truck (for unpacking, you will need to be available very early on Saturday and/or Sunday mornings, Sept 4 and 5 -- please be available to be at the agreed upon site at the Great Lawn or North Meadow at 6:00 a.m. or 6:30 a.m., as determined by the equipment crew; and/or will need to be available between about 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. either or both evenings for re-packing).
  • Registration assistance (will need to be available for a shift on Friday night, September 3 -- perhaps 4:00-6:00, 5:30-7:30, 7:00-9:00, 8:30-10:30; and/or a shift on Saturday morning, September 4 -- perhaps 7:30-9:30 or 9:00-11:00 a.m.)
  • On-field assistance (will need to be available for at least one two-hour shift sometime between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm on Saturday, Sept 4 and/or Sunday, Sept 5) --  serving as runners (bringing bases, materials, first aid supplies, water, etc to each field as needed), score masters (collecting signed official scoresheets from umpires after each game and bringing those to the field table, logging the scores on the official score list at the field table; listing results on bracket boards and assisting co-directors and field captain in determining placement of teams following games, sounding the air horns (at field captain's direction) to signal starts and ends of games), welcomers (to greet out of town teams/players and assist them with finding things, answering questions, etc.), and/or general on-call assistants to assist in tasks as determined by field captain and/or co-director.
  • Party Patrol (will need to be available for at least two hours -- either on Friday, Sept 3 between 5:00 and 11:00 p.m.; Saturday, Sept 4 between 6:00 and 11:00 p.m.; and/or Sunday between 5:00 and 11:00 p.m.) -- to serve as point people (for either Friday opening party at the Ritz, Saturday parties at Boxers and Henrietta Hudson, or Sunday after-party at the Eagle -- dealing with needs of tournament co-directors, bar management, djs, talent, caterers, and coordinating set-up and breakdown), and assistants (helping with a variety of tasks related to the party as needed, as determined by point person; assistants will also be needed for Sunday evening closing party at Splash, to work with point person Aaron Jusino and the tournament co-directors).
Please feel free to invite your teammates, friends, family members, anyone you believe would enjoy helping out as we carry out the tournament and support a great organization -- SAGE-NY.

We need lots of people, as there is much to do, so please try to find some time to get involved.

If you'd like to help, please let me know your name, team, e-mail address and phone number, as well as the name, team (if applicable), e-mail address and phone number of anyone you plan to bring with you -- after getting that person's consent, of course -- as well as the day(s) and hours you (and your friend(s)) are available and the task(s) you (and your friend(s)) would like to help with.

Thanks.

Playing for Life Fundraisers

Fundraisers and on-line donations are being solicited to help the Playing for Life Committee raise operating funds and cover up-front costs so that what is raised later through team fees and merchandising can be donated to this year's beneficiary, SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders).

Some of the up-front and operating costs include: equipment costs, permit costs, awards, promotional items, umpire fees, program coordination and printing, and supplies.

There are likely to be some other costs related to the tournament operations that are not listed here, and the committee hopes to leave some operating funds in the tournament account for next year's committee, so we have to raise quite a bit of money to get things rolling.  As you can see, there are many expenses related to running the tournament, and your participation in fundraisers and on-line contributions helps us to meet these expenses so we have a successful tournament.  Thank you for your generosity. Click here to give.
