A Little History...

The Manhattan Community Athletic Association (MCAA) is born. It consists of 12 teams. Ramrod wins the first league championship and represents New York in the first Gay Softball World Series against San Francisco Badlands.

The MCAA’s softball league officially becomes the Big Apple Softball League (BASL). It has 16 teams.

The BASL holds its first “Big Apple Follies.” The league also hosts the Autumn Classic tournament, with 16 teams participating. It changes from fast pitch to arc pitch, to conform to other cities in NAGAAA (North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance).

The BASL adopts a two-division structure. On the Saturday before Gay Pride Day, it hosts its first “Old-Timers” All-Star Game as a benefit for SAGE.

The BASL, in its 10th season, hosts the Gay Softball World Series, with teams from 19 cities attending.

The BASL establishes competitive and recreational divisions. The Breakers, sponsored by Ty’s/Chelsea Transfer, win the first championship of the Gay Softball World Series Recreational Division Tournament, in Dallas.

The BASL hosts the “Playing for Life” AIDS-benefit tournament over the Fourth of July weekend. A total of 22 teams participate.

The Dugout Dodgers win the B Division championship of the Gay Softball World Series, in Nashville.

The Big Apple Softball League celebrates its 20th season of play. The Dugout Sunny Day Knights win the B Division championship of the Gay Softball World Series, in Minneapolis.

The Townhouse Knights finish third in the A Division of the Gay Softball World Series, in Kansas City.

The BASL celebrates its 25th anniversary.

At the Gay Softball World Series, in Dallas, Eagle finishes fourth in the B Division and Rage finishes third in the C Division—the best overall showing by BASL teams in Series history.
